The amazing Zotero research management tool has some new updates. If you’re not using Zotero yet, I’ll tell you why you should be!
To update: in Firefox, select Tools > Add-ons, and select the “Find Updates” button in the bottom left corner of the window.
Here’s an overview of all the changes:
- Ability to save Zotero files in a directory other than your Firefox profile directory
- note that before you do this you should export your collections, change your directory, and import your saved library into your new folder*. If you haven’t installed Zotero yet, make choosing your storage directory your first step!
- auto-renaming of PDFs
- support for indexing and scanning of PDFs (experimental, but future versions will allow reindexing of existing files)
- text size changeable
- Annotation bar for snapshots!!! Highlight and/or place sticky notes on snapshots (the bar is at the top of the screen if you don’t see it).
There’s also a whole new set of very helpful screencasts to introduce you to Zotero and help you get started, and an alpha release of a plug-in for MS Word integration.
By the way, if you like the idea of clipping webpages and taking notes on them, but don’t need the complexity of a research manager, you should try Google Notebook.
* I actually ended up uninstalling and installing fresh. Keen-eyed readers will also note that this blog has migrated to WordPress, and is now Zotero-friendly. Try it by clicking the icon that appears to the right of the site address in your browser address bar. Not that you’d actually want to add any of my posts to your Zotero. It’s just an example. It took me all of 2 minutes to set it up.
