How to use Google Reader to automatically share an RSS feed

22Jul07

In a quest to keep using Newsgator instead of switching over entirely to Google Reader, I hunted for this solution with no success.* However, the answer is quite easy - In Google Reader, subscribe to the feed you want to share, tag it, and share the tag! It’s under Settings, Tags. Just click the RSS icon. You can do anything with your shared tag that you can do with the Shared Items Feed - share the RSS feed, the web page, put a clip on your website.

Why this is helpful:
You can mix a feed with your shared items and others, if you’d like. However, if you’re sharing from another service (say, Newsgator Clippings), each item will be attributed to the shared feed’s name -not the source feed - which may be somewhat problematic [this is a tech post, nothing more!]. You can sort of do this with some types of items and a Feedburner splice, But the shared tag offers a lot more functionality than what’s available through the now-owned-by-Google service.

You can also tag all the shared feeds you’re reading, share the tag, and transmit the massive uber-feed. Cool. Wish Greader could be set to filter out duplicate items!

You can also engage in massive copyright infringement, but I would advise against doing so.

* I ended up switching to Google Reader anyhow - didn’t want to pay another thirty bucks to use NetNewsWire (which I kind of hated, but it synced with my feeds). Sad, really. I’ve been a customer since they launched the Outlook reader, switched to FeedDemon, and paid for sync the whole time.

    Hi Brandy,

I noticed you mentioned Outlook at the end of the post — are you still looking for a solution that works there? If so, you should try out Attensa’s RSS reader for Outlook (it’s free). You can sync your feeds between Outlook, the web, and your mobile phone. Plus, the reader has power-user features like syncing with your del.icio.us tags and automatic prioritization of feeds and posts you read the most. Download it here: http://www.attensa.com/products/outlook/

    Cheers,
    Paul and the Attensa team
