Note: Not how to share EDGE with your mac.
Sharing your internet connection with your iphone is easy, and basically there is only one situation where it is useful: if you only have an ethernet connection, and no wifi available (or you have wifi but it’s weak and you prefer to connect with ethernet, or perhaps that your wifi is not accessible by iphone for some reason because the network administrators have made it impossible to connect except from some silly web browser thing). For instance, you could be a hotel in DC with an ethernet connection but no wifi to test out the new itunes wifi store on your phone.
Solution: System Preferences, Sharing, Internet tab, Share your connection from built in ethernet, to computers using AirPort, hit airport options to set up a password and select the name for your ad-hoc network.
Go into iPhone, connect to your network. I don’t know if it needs to be said, but your new network won’t work if your computer is off.

Hey! thats a good trick, could i use it to connect to the web using a moto q as a modem with the mac, and sharing that connection with my iphone?
I don’t think there’s any reason that you couldn’t. Now, this could possibly violate your terms of service with the applicable internet provider. But in terms of what’s technologically possible, you should be able to create an ad-hoc network using any source.
