when copyright infringement hits home

13Mar07

Wow. I really thought that no copyright lawyer would ever be so stupid and inane as to blatantly infringe the copyright in my firm website. Word for word copying.

Yet, two have. We spent hours and hours and hours writing my website. I get compliments on the text all the time. I suppose in some tiny way it is flattering.

But mostly it makes me angry.

Said infringers have until March 13, 2007, 1pm EDST to take down the infringing material, or I post the culprits here.

They should be ashamed of themselves. I don’t like being hostile to other attorneys at all. But should these fools tempt me, they will find how a real copyright lawyer operates.

While you’re at it, check to see if your website has been plagiarized at Copyscape. If you happen to not be a copyright lawyer, and would like assistance in your web copyright infringement matter, you know who to call.

UPDATE: One down, one to go. The threat of public humiliation sure is an effective tool.

UPDATE 2: The second one is down. more later.

But does this copyright attorney actually have a copyright registration to protect her artistic expression? :-)

My website has also been directly copied twice (that I know of). The first time, chunks of text from my website appeared almost word-for-word on the website of a law graduate (not then admitted to practice) who was also offering legal research and writing services to other lawyers. The second time, text from my website was included in a mass e-mail by what appeared to be a paralegal outfit offering legal research and writing services. I sent C&D letters, and they did the trick.

The threats really were effective & quick. I did send a c+d & takedown notice to the third (yes, third!) infringer, but it turned out to be a really misguided college student…

Who's linking?
